Before the Lining, There Was This

This Filson Tin Cloth Short Cruiser is the old-school, unlined version of one of Filson's most recognisable work jackets. Made in the USA and dating from the 2000s–2010s, it's built from heavyweight 14 oz oil-finish Tin Cloth – tough, weather-resistant waxed cotton designed for serious outdoor use.

And this one has already done some living. The Tin Cloth has softened and developed a beautiful worn-in patina, with the creases and variations in the waxed finish that make a used Filson considerably more interesting than one fresh out of the box.

Founded in Seattle in 1897, Filson built its reputation making dependable clothing and equipment for people working in demanding outdoor conditions. Forestry, hunting, fishing and the rugged Pacific Northwest have shaped the brand's identity for well over a century.

🛢️ Tin Cloth – Built to Take a Beating

Tin Cloth is one of Filson's signature materials: densely woven cotton canvas treated with an oil-wax finish to provide excellent resistance against rain, wind, brush and abrasion.

This jacket uses the heavyweight 14 oz oil-finish version. Tin Cloth begins relatively stiff but gradually softens and moulds itself to the wearer. The wax shifts, creases and wears with use, creating the distinctive patina seen on this jacket. In other words, the wear isn't something to hide – it's rather the point.

🪓 The Original Short Cruiser

The Short Cruiser takes Filson's workwear philosophy and puts it into a compact, hip-length jacket. The shorter cut prevents the jacket from riding up when seated and leaves easy access to trouser pockets or a tool belt.

This older version is particularly interesting because it is completely unlined. It's essentially a tough Tin Cloth shell, making it lighter and more versatile than the later lined versions. The classic pocket arrangement includes large hand pockets plus chest storage for small tools and everyday gear, while adjustable cuffs and hem allow the fit to be tightened when needed.

Filson eventually brought this original unlined design back from its archives for a limited Made-in-USA release – a pretty good indication that they realised they had got it right the first time.

🧼 Care

Do not wash or dry clean. Brush away dirt or wipe clean with a damp cloth. Rewax when needed to maintain the Tin Cloth's water resistance.

The oil finish may transfer to light-coloured fabrics, particularly in warm weather, so prolonged contact with them should be avoided.
