The Grandfather of the Chief Joseph Coat

This is not merely a vintage Pendleton coat – it's an early example of one of the great designs in American Western wear. Dating from the 1960s and carrying Pendleton's High Grade Western Wear label, this Chief Joseph wool coat comes from the early days of a style Pendleton would continue producing in various forms for decades.

The coat combines that unmistakable geometric wool with a wonderfully substantial thick and soft shearling collar. Four oversized leather buttons close the front, while the large flap pockets have beautifully pointed Western-style flaps. Inside is a quilted lining, and underneath the collar you'll even find the leather hanging loop typical of Pendleton coats from this era.

Best of all, the coat is in amazing vintage condition. A genuine survivor from the 1960s – and something of a grandfather to the Chief Joseph coats that followed.

🏹 The Chief Joseph Pattern

The Chief Joseph is one of Pendleton's oldest and most iconic designs. First woven in the 1920s, it was created in honour of Chief Joseph – Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt – the celebrated leader of the Nimíipuu, or Nez Perce people.

The pattern's distinctive arrowhead motifs symbolize bravery, strength and integrity, pointing toward the Four Sacred Directions: North, South, East and West. Over the following century, Chief Joseph became one of the patterns most closely associated with Pendleton and remains in production today.

That makes this 1960s coat particularly special. This isn't a modern revival of a heritage pattern – it's an early piece from the period when Pendleton was already turning the Chief Joseph design into an enduring icon of Western clothing.
