A seriously practical take on one of the great military outerwear designs. The Särmä Windproof Fishtail Parka was developed by Finnish military and outdoor specialist Varusteleka, taking the legendary U.S. Army M-1951 fishtail parka as its starting point and adapting the concept for modern everyday use.

Made from sturdy olive green polycotton with a windproof PU coating, it has the unmistakable long fishtail silhouette, a generous adjustable hood and plenty of protection when the weather turns nasty. The front closes with a zipper beneath a storm flap with those wonderfully oversized military-style buttons.

Drawcords at the waist and hem allow you to adjust the shape and keep the wind out, while the large flap pockets provide plenty of useful storage. The fishtail itself can also be worn loose or folded up and secured.

This one is preowned but in excellent, practically like-new condition.

Särmä is the in-house clothing line of Helsinki-based Varusteleka, one of Finland's best-known military, outdoor and surplus specialists. Rather than simply reproducing old military garments stitch for stitch, Särmä often takes proven military designs and modifies them into practical clothing for modern civilian use.

This parka is a perfect example. Its roots are unmistakably military, but the result works just as well over jeans and boots on a wet autumn day. Better yet, Varusteleka has now discontinued the Windproof Fishtail Parka, so finding a barely used example is becoming a little more interesting.
